Recently I was interviewed by Cassie Smith of the Elgin Courier.

Q: What are your thoughts on the upcoming run-off election?
A: As a third-generation law enforcement officer, I believe I am the most qualified candidate, who has specific plans to make the sheriff's office effective and efficient. The election that ultimately counts is in November. So in the coming months I will be working hard to demonstrate to voters that I am the best person for the job no matter who is my opponent.

Q: How do you plan to win in the November election?
A: I will meet with as many people as possible throughout Bastrop County to inform them about my background and experience and to share my specific plans for improving the sheriff's office.

Q: What makes you the better candidate? How do you plan to help Bastrop County?
A: I have a degree in education as well as more than two decades of experience in law enforcement. My philosophy is to lead by example. Until recently, I was an instructor at a law enforcement and security training academy. Therefore, I am up-to-date on the latest methods of dealing with criminals as well as law enforcement issues. As Bastrop County sheriff, I will reduce the time it takes to respond to calls for help. Using my teaching experience, I will conduct classes on ways for citizens to reduce their chances of becoming crime victims. I have the knowledge and ability to optimize contracts for housing federal inmates, bringing revenue to the county. I will improve and expand opportunities for citizens to augment our paid staff by forming the Bastrop County Sheriff's Posse, an official auxiliary of the sheriff's office. I will work with county commissioners to increase the use of non-violent county inmates to do county work, including litter patrols and cleanup of county parks.

Q: Anything you would like to add?

A: I have a plan and the ability to carry out that plan to improve training for deputies and correctional officers, to improve morale, and to increase professionalism within the department to regain the public's trust.
